I thought that I should discuss several very important cases that were decided on by the Supreme Court Justices. I thought these cases were important because each one of these cases will always be remembered by the American Citizens and throughout history.
Marbury v. Madison
In the case of Marbury v. Madison it is the most well known in American history. The Courts decision established judicial review, that allowed this branch to review the actions of the legislative and executive branches of government. Mr. Madison sued Mr. James Madison and the case went to the Supreme Court, in 1789. This was the first time in history the Supreme Court struck the law due to the fact it deemed it unconstitutional.
Brown v. Board of Education
This case was is a very important case in history due to the fact it is about the civil rights movement and rights. In the 1950’s schools were segregated by a person’s race. In this case Ms. Linda Brown, her sister, and friends were not allowed to attend a “white” school. Members of a small group filed a case on behalf of the families stating that the Board of Education violated their Fourteenth Amendment rights by having a segregated school system. The case reached the Supreme Court and the Court ruled that the segregation in the school system was unconstitutional and it violated the Fourteenth Amendment.
Theresa Marie Schiavo, Incapacitated ex. Rel. Robert and Mary Schindler v. Michael Schiavo, Guardian: Theresa Schiavo, Incapacitated
In this case Mrs. Theresa Marie Schiavo was married to Mr. Michael Schiavo. Mrs. Theresa Marie Schiavo was incapacitated due to an injury. Mrs. Schiavo was kept on life support from 1990until 2005. After many medical complications, Mrs. Schiavo was in a vegetative state, which means she had no brain activity. Mr. Schiavo asked the court to remove her feeding tube to allow her to pass naturally. Robert Mrs. Schiavo’s parents, disagreed and had the feeding tube replaced. President George Bush signed legislation to keep her alive and to fight for her rights. When the case was heard by the Supreme Court the court ruled that her rights should be protected by law makers and that her feeding tube should be removed because she was brain damaged and there was no chance of her leading a “normal” life.
